On Sunday, Mark Zuckerberg announced the introduction of a new subscription-based product called Meta Verified.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in an Instagram update that Meta is rolling out a brand-new premium verification subscription service called Meta Verified.

Users on Meta’s Instagram and Facebook platforms will be able to submit their government ID and receive a blue verification badge for $11.99 a month on the web and $14.99 a month on iOS. This week, the service will launch in Australia and New Zealand; with more countries to follow soon.

Meta Verified is a subscription that includes:

  • a verified badge
  • customer support for most common issues
  • active impersonation monitoring
  • prioritization for Meta Verified profiles in other people’s comments
  • recommendations in the Explore page and Reels on Instagram
  • exclusive stickers in your Instagram stories.

“This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services,” Zuckerberg wrote in the post.

Politicians, executives, members of the press, and organizations have historically received verification from Meta to vouch for their legitimacy. The new subscription service from the corporation is comparable to Twitter Blue, a service that grants users a verification badge in exchange for a monthly fee.

Twitter launched its revamped Twitter Blue subscription service in December. According to its new owner Elon Musk, also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October, the new verification system will be “the great leveler” and give more “power to the people.”

Twitter Blue had been briefly made available in November, but it was temporarily discontinued after users abused the new paid feature to impersonate celebrities and brands.

A Meta spokesperson said on Sunday that Meta Verified also comes with impersonation protections. To qualify for a subscription, users must be at least 18 years old, meet the minimum requirements for account activity, and submit official identification that matches their profile name and photo. Subscriptions will include “proactive monitoring” to identify potential account impersonation.

While Musk has openly expressed his intention to eventually remove badges from Twitter accounts that were verified before the launch of Twitter Blue, Meta will not make changes to accounts that are already verified during the testing of its service, according to its spokesperson.

Businesses are not currently eligible to apply for Meta Verified, and the company said users will not be able to change their profile name, username, date of birth, or profile photo without going through the application process again.
