Pre-orders for the new device kicked off midday on Saturday, just days ahead of Apple’s anticipated iPhone 16 launch, scheduled for early Tuesday in Beijing.

Huawei has officially secured over 2.7 million pre-orders for the world’s first tri-fold smartphone (actual two folds/three panels), the Mate XT, according to today’s update on its website.

The Chinese tech giant had previously announced plans to unveil a new product on Tuesday afternoon but has not yet revealed the price for the Mate XT. Official sales of the smartphone are set to begin on September 20.

Apple, meanwhile, is facing challenges in the Chinese market. For the first time, the company did not rank among the top five smartphone vendors in China during the second quarter of 2023. Huawei secured the fourth spot, shipping 10.6 million units, while Apple shipped 10 million phones in the first quarter.

While Huawei and other Chinese brands have already introduced foldable and flip phones, Apple has yet to venture into these categories.
