Samsung Display has confirmed that mass production of the first rollable OLED displays for laptops will commence in April 2025. This innovative technology allows users to expand the screen size with the press of a button, offering greater versatility and usability.
Flexible screen design
The rollable OLED display was showcased at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, featured in Lenovo’s ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable. This laptop integrates the expandable screen, which can adjust seamlessly from 14 inches in a 5:4 aspect ratio to 16.7 inches in an 8:9 aspect ratio. This adaptability makes the device suitable for use as both a compact laptop and a larger workspace tool, depending on the user’s needs.
Energy efficiency and market debut
Samsung’s new displays utilize Eco² OLED technology, which enhances light transmittance, reducing energy consumption by up to 30%. This results in improved brightness control and greater energy efficiency. Lenovo plans to release the ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable in June 2025, with availability expected to begin in select markets.
“As the rollable display extends, it may experience stress, but based on our foldable mass-production experience, we have designed to ensure durability in our rollable products,” stated Youngseok Kim, Vice President and Head of Samsung Display IT Sales.
Implications for the display market
The rollable OLED technology represents a potential game-changer for the display industry. It provides manufacturers with new opportunities to create devices that are highly portable yet functional for intensive work tasks. Industry analysts anticipate that other manufacturers will follow Samsung and Lenovo’s lead, developing their own devices featuring similar rollable displays. As of now, no competing models have been announced.
