Apple’s latest budget-friendly smartphone features a notch display with Face ID, the powerful A18 chip, and a USB-C port. As the iPhone SE’s successor, it replaces Touch ID with a modern design – but what more does it offer?

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 16E, its latest entry-level smartphone, marking a significant shift by eliminating the traditional Touch ID home button in favor of a Face ID-enabled notch.

Design and display

Drawing inspiration from the 2022 iPhone 14, the iPhone 16E features a 6.1-inch OLED display with a notch housing the front-facing camera and Face ID technology. This design update signifies Apple’s complete transition away from the Touch ID system, embracing a more modern, bezel-less aesthetic. The device is available in two color options: white and black.

Performance and hardware

Under the hood, the iPhone 16E is powered by Apple’s latest A18 chip, ensuring robust performance and compatibility with the Apple Intelligence suite. The device comes equipped with 8GB of RAM and offers three storage variants: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

Notably, it introduces Apple’s first in-house developed cellular modem, the C1, aimed at reducing reliance on third-party components and enhancing power efficiency. This advancement contributes to the device’s impressive battery life, offering up to 26 hours of video playback.

Camera and additional features

The iPhone 16E is equipped with a single 48-megapixel rear camera, providing high-quality photo and video capabilities, including 4K video recording at 60 frames per second. The front-facing 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera supports Face ID authentication and delivers sharp selfies.

While the device includes a customizable Action Button for quick access to preferred functions, it lacks support for MagSafe accessories and fast wireless charging, offering standard Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W instead.

Connectivity and charging

Aligning with recent regulatory changes, the iPhone 16E features a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, replacing the longstanding Lightning port. This change ensures compatibility with a broader range of accessories and charging solutions. The device supports 5G connectivity, though it does not include mmWave support, focusing on the more widely available sub-6GHz bands.

Market position and availability

Serving as a successor to the iPhone SE line, the iPhone 16E offers consumers a modern design and advanced features at a more accessible price point within Apple’s ecosystem. Preorders begin on February 21, with official availability starting Friday, February 28. The base model with 128GB storage is priced at $599, positioning the iPhone 16E as a compelling option for those seeking a balance between performance and affordability.
