Apple’s Vision Pro headset is already at the forefront of mixed-reality technology, but new reports suggest the company is exploring innovative ways to push its boundaries further.

Apple is reportedly considering integrating its custom 5G modem into a future Vision Pro model, a move that could reshape its mixed-reality headset lineup. While the second-generation Vision Pro is expected to debut next year with the M5 chip, it will not include this modem. However, discussions are underway to bring cellular connectivity to headsets, with potential long-term plans for standalone AR glasses.

The in-house 5G modem could significantly enhance the Vision Pro’s design by making it lighter and independent of iPhone tethering. Future iterations might also benefit from improved functionality, including seamless connectivity across devices. Apple is already working to include cellular modems in other products like Macs and aims to outperform Qualcomm with 5G capabilities in upcoming iPhones.

By integrating its custom 5G modem, Apple could reshape how these devices operate, offering users greater freedom and functionality.

For now, Apple’s exploration remains in early stages, and commercial viability will determine whether the 5G modem makes its way into Vision Pro or other devices. Updates are expected as Apple refines its roadmap.
