China has introduced the first mobile 5G base station specifically designed for military use, marking a breakthrough in battlefield communications. Developed collaboratively by China Mobile Communications Group and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), this advanced system can provide secure, high-speed, low-latency data services to more than 10,000 users within a 3-kilometer radius.
The technology ensures reliable connectivity even when PLA troops are on the move at speeds of up to 80 km/h, navigating complex terrains like urban areas or mountainous regions, and operating under electromagnetic interference. With a data throughput capacity of 10 gigabits per second and a latency of less than 15 milliseconds, the system is well-suited for demanding military operations.
This innovation is a key component in China’s efforts to develop an expansive unmanned military force, including drones, robot dogs, and autonomous combat platforms. Such a force could eventually outnumber human soldiers, requiring advanced communication systems to manage vast data exchange demands effectively.
Unlike civilian 5G, military-grade 5G must operate in challenging conditions, such as environments where satellite signals are unreliable or ground base stations are absent. The system’s design also addresses practical constraints, such as keeping vehicle-mounted antennas under 3 meters to navigate obstacles like trees and buildings, while still delivering robust signal coverage.
China’s achievement underscores its commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technology into its defense strategy, potentially setting a new benchmark for military communications worldwide.
