Croatian Motorways (HAC) has announced plans to build four solar power plants along the A3 motorway, making Croatia home to its first “solar highway.”
These power plants will be located at the Zagreb Plitvice and Rastovica rest stops, as well as at the Sredanci and Ivanja Reka junctions, covering a total area of approximately 36 hectares.
The goal of this project is to reduce HAC’s dependence on traditional energy sources by transitioning to renewable energy, in line with Croatia’s National Development Strategy for 2030.
The initiative also includes expanding the network of charging stations for electric vehicles, with plans to install 259 charging stations across 1,100 kilometers of motorways over the next five years.
The tender for the conceptual design of the solar power plants is open until February 24, and selected designers will have eight months to complete the project.
In addition to these four sites, HAC is planning further solar power plant installations as part of the “Green Transformation of Croatian Highways” initiative, in collaboration with the European Investment Bank.
