Hrvatski Telekom has announced the deployment of a 5G network for the new container terminal in Rijeka, located in the northern Adriatic Sea. The terminal, still under construction, is expected to begin operations next year.
According to HT’s press release last week, the mobile carrier was selected by Rijeka Gateway d.o.o. – a port operating company established by A.P. Moller-Maersk and ENNA Group – to supply the state-of-the-art 5G infrastructure for the new facility. It could thus become the only terminal in this part of Europe with remotely operated cranes.
While the company did not disclose the financial details of the agreement, it highlighted that APM Terminals, a subsidiary of the Maersk Group responsible for managing wireless connectivity in over 70 ports worldwide, will implement this new operational model. The project in Rijeka will involve transitioning from the current 5G NSA architecture to the more advanced 5G SA architecture, making the terminal the first to utilize Hrvatski Telekom’s public network private slice.
This development marks another significant advancement in integrating 5G technology within the maritime sector.
