This marks the first deployment of a standalone (SA) 5G network in the region, enabling advanced applications, automation, and enhanced efficiency in warehouse and industrial operations.

Kontron, as a leading European provider of secure and advanced digital solutions, specializing in communication, business, and industrial applications, in collaboration with Telekom Slovenije, has successfully deployed a private 5G mobile network at Cinkarna Celje, a major industrial company. The network, covering seven warehouses and production facilities, is a key step in the digital transformation of the company’s operations.

Comprehensive 5G solution for industrial applications

Kontron supplied both the software and hardware necessary for implementing the 5G standalone core network, while Telekom Slovenije provided secure and high-performance connectivity through its 5G radio access network (RAN).

“Our Slovenian-developed private 5G network solution ensures secure and seamless connectivity across industrial sites, offering high mobility, real-time data transmission, and device management tailored for industrial applications,” said Janez Öri, Executive Director of Communication Solutions at Kontron.

The new network will initially support warehouse automation, integrating barcode readers and sensors for real-time inventory tracking. Over time, additional business processes at Cinkarna Celje will also be digitalized using this private 5G infrastructure.

Step forward in digital transformation

Cinkarna Celje is a renowned industrial manufacturer with a 150-year legacy, specializing in the production of titanium dioxide pigment and other innovative industrial materials. With approximately 720 employees, Cinkarna Celje sees 5G connectivity as a crucial asset in improving efficiency, productivity, and safety.

“The introduction of Slovenia’s first commercial 5G private network is a significant milestone for our company. It provides fast and reliable data transmission, crucial for automation and remote operations, while also enhancing workplace safety and operational stability,” said Aleš Skok, President of the Management Board at Cinkarna Celje.

Future-proof industrial network

Kontron’s 5G standalone core network is designed for next-generation industrial applications, offering fast deployment, intelligent management, and strong data protection.

“This solution, developed at Kontron’s R&D center in Kranj, is engineered for rapid implementation in various industrial environments. It enables companies to embrace digital transformation while maintaining high security standards,” explained Janez Öri.

The new private 5G network will also support Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions, including autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) and smart sensors for real-time monitoring and process control.
