Nokia is stepping up to replace Huawei in Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network infrastructure. The Finnish company has entered a significant agreement with the German telecom giant to roll out Open RAN (ORAN) solutions across 3,000 sites in Germany.
This shift follows ongoing concerns about Huawei’s potential security risks, which have led nations like the UK and the US to push for the removal of Chinese-made 5G components.
Deutsche Telekom previously expressed challenges in replacing Huawei, citing cost, time, and required expertise. However, Nokia’s ORAN technology offers cost-efficiency and interoperability by integrating solutions from various suppliers. Commercial deployment has already begun in Germany, marking a major step in Nokia’s re-emergence in Europe’s telecommunications market.
This partnership also includes Fujitsu, signaling a collaborative approach to laying a secure 5G foundation. Alongside Nokia, Ericsson is expected to become a leading supplier in Europe as the region accelerates its transition to secure and efficient 5G infrastructure.
