Oppo and Ericsson have entered into a global agreement for 5G patent cross-licensing, the companies revealed on July 15th. Under this multi-year arrangement, Oppo will pay royalties for the use of 5G technology in its upcoming devices, while both companies will collaborate on device testing and marketing initiatives.
Feng Ying, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Oppo, emphasized that this partnership represents a significant move for the company as it aims to build a robust intellectual property (IP) portfolio. He expressed optimism about resolving any future IP disputes through “friendly negotiation that respects the value of patents.”
Ericsson commented that the royalty-bearing license agreement will enable the company to “invest further in fundamental communications technologies.”
This announcement follows a recent settlement between Oppo and Nokia regarding their 5G patent conflict. The current landscape is characterized by a wave of renewed partnership agreements, as Nokia has also extended its collaborations with Samsung, Honor, and Apple concerning devices utilizing next-generation cellular technology.
