In late 2024, T-Mobile joined forces with NVIDIA, Ericsson, and Nokia to push the boundaries of next-generation wireless technology. The collaboration has now deepened, with T-Mobile and NVIDIA announcing a new initiative focused on creating 6G networks powered by artificial intelligence.

Along with MITRE, Cisco, ODC, and Booz Allen Hamilton, T-Mobile and NVIDIA are working to develop an AI-driven network architecture for 6G. Central to this effort is NVIDIA’s AI Aerial platform, which was introduced last year with the goal of reshaping wireless networks by integrating AI and Radio Access Networks (AI-RAN). This platform is designed to enhance network efficiency and performance.

Rather than retrofitting AI into existing systems, the goal is to build AI-native networks from the ground up. This approach will allow operators to deliver better services and maximize the use of limited spectrum resources – something T-Mobile is actively working on by exchanging spectrum with AT&T and Verizon to improve the quality of its 5G network.

By partnering with NVIDIA, T-Mobile will be able to leverage AI-powered network capabilities based on the AI Aerial platform. The first step toward creating an AI-based 6G network is integrating AI-RAN, which combines AI with mobile networks to optimize radio signal processing.

The deep integration of AI into the network is expected to result in improved spectral efficiency, reduced operational complexity, and lower costs, marking the beginning of T-Mobile’s journey into 6G technology. T-Mobile’s CEO, Mike Sievert, expressed hope that this collaboration will enable the company to power the next generation of customer experiences.

NVIDIA’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, commented that AI-RAN would allow telecommunications providers to offer enhanced experiences through generative AI, robotics, and autonomous technologies. He also highlighted the revolutionary potential of next-gen wireless networks, stressing the importance of integrating AI from the start to achieve extreme spectral efficiency.

T-Mobile previously promised that the development of AI-RAN would lead to transformational network experiences for its customers, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability needed for gaming, augmented reality, and social media applications.

AI-RAN will develop algorithms to optimize network adjustments, predict capacity needs, and unlock the performance customers expect from wireless networks.
