The European Union has announced the selection of ten new projects to receive €50 million in funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) program. This funding, focusing on ‘5G for Smart Communities,’ covers several notable private 5G initiatives, including the first smart 5G port in Croatia.

A trial involving smart street lamps that have the capability to accommodate EV charging stations and enhance wireless connectivity is set to commence in 6 locations across the UK.

During a session at CES 2023 in Las Vegas last weekend, a panel of experts said that 5G wireless connectivity and other smart city-related technologies may soon deliver on their promises as tech companies, local governments, and others develop new uses and business cases.

The first 200 street lamps have recently been installed by the authorities in the city’s outer neighborhoods, but they should shortly total 1,000.

Mayor Tomislav Tomašević presented the app through which citizens and entrepreneurs can obtain information about the solar potential of their own roof, and the resulting savings and return on investment in case of installing a solar power plant on top of their premises.
